Your Job Search Is Broken. Here’s How to Fix It.
You find a promising startup role at 1:14 a.m.
The product looks exciting. The team is small. The job description somehow asks for React, TypeScript, design sense, backend awareness, and the ability to “move fast.”
You click Apply.
Then silence.
For many job seekers, that is the startup-job-search experience: twenty tabs open, forty applications sent, and one unanswered email sitting in the inbox like a tiny ghost.
The better approach is not necessarily applying to more jobs. It is applying with more intention.
Think of job platforms like different streets in the same city. LinkedIn is the crowded highway: massive reach, plenty of opportunities, but lots of noise. Wellfound and Y Combinator’s startup board are more like walking into a room where founders are actually building early-stage companies. Remote-focused platforms such as Remotive and Remote OK can save you from the heartbreak of discovering a “remote” role is only remote within a country you do not live in.
The real shift happens when you stop treating every platform the same.
Use broad boards to discover companies. Use startup-specific boards to find higher-signal roles. Use company pages, founder posts, and your network to understand what a team is building before you apply. Then send a CV and short message that make one thing clear:
“I understand the problem you are solving, and I can help.”
That sentence does more work than a hundred generic applications.
Your portfolio is not just a link. Your GitHub is not just a profile. They are proof that you build, learn, and care enough to finish things. Put them where they can be seen.
The goal is not to be everywhere. It is to be memorable in the right places.
